How to negotiate a used car price in Malaysia (and not get taken advantage of)

Negotiating a used car price in Malaysia requires preparation and patience. Here is a practical framework.

Do your research first

Check GO.my, Carsome, and Mudah for comparable listings. Know the market rate for the exact year, mileage, and condition before you meet the seller.

Inspect before you negotiate

Use a torch to check for paint overspray (sign of accident repair). Check under the bonnet for coolant leaks or oil residue. Check the floor mats and boot for water stains. Listen for any unusual sounds on a test drive.

Get a Carfax or JPJ history check

Run the chassis number through JPJ to verify ownership history. Some dealers offer Carfax checks. Any accident history should reduce the price by 10–20%.

The negotiation

Start 10–15% below asking price. Do not show too much enthusiasm. Be willing to walk away — it is the most powerful negotiating tool you have. For private sales, cash is a strong bargaining chip.
