Buying an EV in Malaysia 2024: incentives, charging and what to watch out for

Electric vehicle adoption in Malaysia has accelerated with government incentives and new model launches. Here is the practical guide for 2024.

Current incentives

Full import and excise duty exemption on EVs until end 2025. Road tax exemption. No AP required for EVs (separate approval pathway). Some states offer free parking.

Popular models

BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, and Volvo EX40 are the most popular. Tesla Model 3 and Y have an established charging network. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 offer excellent performance.

Charging infrastructure

ChargEV, JomCharge, and Tesla Supercharger networks cover most major highways and shopping centres. Residential charging requires a home charger installation (RM 1,500–3,000).

Watch out for

Battery warranty terms vary. Check whether the manufacturer warranty covers capacity degradation. Resale values for EVs are still uncertain in Malaysia — factor this into your decision.
